Welcome to Catholic Social Teaching! Your catechist, Mrs. Bauer, and I will be bringing various topics forward for classroom discussion, posting articles and links here to articles as well as youtube videos. You will need to choose an article or specific instance each month that applies to your current topic area and write a one page essay on it. In the essay you will 1) summarize briefly the situation 2) state the relevant Catholic Social Teaching on the situation - there may be several - you may choose the one you believe is most relevant and 3) summarize how you would proceed, vote, etc if you were able and why. There is rarely only one answer so please really think about this. You will be making decisions for the rest of your life. It is important to make them with "an informed Conscience." We hope that you enjoy the class, movies, and articles that we bring in. Please feel free to respond to blog comments. Note that inappropriate (not challenging) comments will be deleted. Always use appropriate and respectful language. Our Confirmation Candidates in Year 1 are also taking this course. They will have to write a longer essay choosing one situation about which they are passionate and get involved in it over next summer.
Also, if there is some interest, we would like to arrange a mission trip for next year. I am considering areas like the Adirondak Mountains or West Virginia. We'll talk more about that later at our SLYM meetings. Plan to attend this Friday at 6 PM to continue working on our room. Bowling is next Sunday September 29 at 1:30 PM.
I am Patricia Dyer, Director of Faith Formation at St. Lawrence Church. I am a graduate of both Christ the King Seminary and SUNY Stony Brook's School of Health Sciences. I am passionate about Catholic Social Teaching and welcome your comments, ideas etc.
