                                Weekly Justice Challenge

_What did Ghandi think were the Seven Deadly social sins?  According to this website  dedicated to Ghandi, they are:
                                1. Wealth without work
                                2. Pleasure without conscience
                                3. Science without humanity
                                4. Knowledge without character
                                5. Politics without principle
                                6. Commerce without morality
                                7. Worship without sacrifice.
Would this be compatible with what Jesus would say?  Try to find parables, letters, or speeches in the Bible that speak to each of these.    Are there any present day examples of these things?  If so, is there a way for us as Catholic Christians to address these issues?  Then complete the Contact Us form.  We will look at these in January and February.  Look for some examples right here!

                                • Knowledge without character.  "That is, an individual knowledge would be of no value if he fails to possess good behavior that will shape his knowledge toward repect for the human dignity in the society."  Here is a link to an essay on the subject.  The Catholic Church has tackled similar issues.  Consider all of the knowledge that it has been theorized could come from embryonic stem cell research.  It is important to consider not only how the knowledge itself is to be used, but how it is to be obtained.  That is, the end does not justify the means.

                                Pope Benedict's prayer for February

Pope Benedict asks that we pray for that all peoples have access to clean water and the resources they require for life and that  the Lord may sustain the efforts of health workers assisting the sick and elderly in the world's poorest regions.  Read more about the Pope's Prayer intentions here.  I once heard that an environmental engineer working at a sewage plant remarked, "Doctors are in charge of public health retail, I am in charge of public health whole sale."  That person was so right.  I know several doctors who have traveled to third world countries.  What they say should be the number one priority is clean water.  Contaminated water is the source of one of the biggest killers of infants and children worldwide - diarrhea.  Diarrhea is a mere annoyance for most people who get it in the US so we tend to forget that it can cause severe dehydration and death in third world countries.  Water is also unavailable for bathing, cleaning and wound decontamination.   If I could give everyone three things they would be, clean water, adequate food, and vaccines.  What would you give?  Are you prepared to accept the Church teaching on the Option for the Poor and Vulnerable?

St. Bernadette  Have you ever wondered if you could be a saint?

Some of our saints have been very wealthy.  Others have been very learned. Still others were war heroes or martyrs.  Many did great things.  This month several saints were considered, but Bernadette, a child born in poverty that only worsened as she grew up, was chosen.  Bernadette was never a healthy girl, she died at 35 years old. Her illnesses nearly kept her from entering the convent. She had cholera, tuberculosis, digestive illnesses.  She is best known for her visions of the Blessed Virgin.  There were 17 visions. She was told to pray for sinners and to have a chapel built in honor of Mary.   Bernadette had difficulty getting people to believe these visions.  One day the Virgin told her to dig in the mud.  A spring came up and has been there ever since.  Today people from all over the world travel to Lourdes to bathe in or drink the water and pray for health miracles.   Bernadette is buried in the chapel of the convent she so loved. Her feast day is April 16.  Our information is from Catholic.org.

History of St. Ann's Church and Shrine
Founded by German immigrants in 1858, Saint Ann’s Church and Shrine is located on the corner of Broadway and Emslie Streets in Buffalo, NY.  The church was dedicated 125 years ago on May 16th, 1886 to St. Ann who is believed to have been the mother of the Virgin Mary.  The edifice is one of the finest gothic masterpieces in the country and among the city’s most prominent historical structures.  The church can easily be seen from Downtown Buffalo and Buffalo’s East Side.
Thousands are welcomed each year for Sunday Mass, special events and tours. Fr. Roy Herberger, who is also pastor of Ss. Columba-Brigid. We encourage all of our out-of-town parishioners and alumni and our other friends to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and to join us for our 10 AM Sunday Mass and visit St. Ann’s whenever they return to Buffalo.  More photographs here.
