A few years ago St. Martin de Porres welcomed the demolition of an abandoned three story classroom building and single floor dwelling on newly reacquired piece of land adjacent to our parking lot beside our church building. The huge lot was flattened and reseeded for new grass. That particular year the summer was very dry. Our meager resources of low water pressure and a garden hose sprinkler with a five foot watering range were no match for the incredible heat of that year’s summer weather. Needless to say we had dust storms on Northampton that year. In a contrary way this weekend’s Biblical lessons give us a window into the early church’s sustained development and spread of the faith. St. Paul’s missionary journeys included revisiting places where he preached, appointing elders, presbyters, to continue to “water” and nourish the new founded churches with solid teaching and preaching. St. Paul proved to be a good manager that led to the sustained growth and development of the early church. Sharing his accomplishments with the more solidly established communities of faith both gave them reason to rejoice and strengthened their resolve to send more missionaries out to proclaim the Good News of Jesus. Members of the early church witnessed the surpassing of the Old Covenant with the New Covenant in the Blood of Jesus. “The old order has passed away…..behold I make all things new” Revelation 21:5. This same management style is necessary for our own walk in faith. Sporadic attendance at worship, failure to nourish and enrich our faith through Biblical and other Theological Study, the lack of gathering in smaller groups for prayer and dialogue, sharing our faith actively, all work to destroy the seeds that were planted in us at our Baptism and nourished in our younger youth. May the Lord give us a hunger to worship our faithful God. May Jesus assist us to gather the Body of Christ together often to pray, share our faith experiences, study and continue to “water” the seeds of faith that God has planted within us.
