One of the most challenging lessons that parents attempt to teach their children is the virtue of kindness especially in regard to “sharing” their toys with others. It seems that we are born with an innate need to possess things as exhibited by the recurring declaration of the word “mine” throughout a child’s life. This weekend’s Biblical lessons teach us the folly of placing too much emphasis on our collected possessions. As our friend Fr. Judd once shared in his weekend preaching, “You don’t see a U-Haul attached to a hearse.” This reality is reflected in the reality check of the wisdom author of the book of Ecclesiastes 2:15… “For here is one who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and that one’s legacy must be left to another who has not toiled for it.” Jesus reinforces this lesson by his story of a wealthy farmer who maxed out his storage space and replaces them with larger ones so that he can relax and not worry for years to come. However “God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God” Luke 12:20-21. I have many young people who hang on me to assist them in their needs. Because I do not posses collected wealth, my response consistently is, “if God blesses me so shall I bless you.” And it often happens that God provides the blessing time and time again that flows through my hands. May the virtue of “Kindness” and “Sharing” be the hallmark of our Christian behavior toward others.
MASS TIME ADJUSTMENT…. Last year when we began with three clergy on our multi-parish team, members of the 12Noon Mass requested to return to the 10am scheduled time. Due to future staff changes, financial considerations, and the inability of our parish priests to accommodate the 10am Mass time, beginning August 7th, the 10:00AM Mass will again return to 12:00Noon. We are sorry for the needed change but necessity requires it. Thank You.
