I had an opportunity this past week to relive an event of my childhood by attending the new version of the movie Ben-Hur. I believe the original version of the movie was the first movie I ever attended as a youngster. The story was indeed captivating with the main focus upon Judah Ben-Hur and his Roman adopted brother. But woven within the plot of the movie was the beginnings of a very humble yet profoundly important ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus used every opportunity to teach a lesson to his disciples and even the crowds who followed him. Luke Chapter 14 recalls an event on the Sabbath when Jesus was invited to a reception at a leading Pharisee’s home. It appears to be a friendly invitation rather than a plot to catch Jesus. While at the event Jesus uses what he observes to teach a two part lesson. One part of the lesson revolves around humility and not looking for attention and recognition in public but accepting it humbly if bestowed upon you by your host. The second lesson was focused upon true generosity in giving and sharing. When giving a banquet Jesus says, “invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous” Luke 14:14. We thank you Jesus for teaching this lesson to us, not only by your words but by the actions of your very life, death, and resurrection.

As our youth come of age especially when they leave the routine of their home and go off to college, they are challenged to begin to care for themselves. You may remember those days of learning how to wash your own clothes and cook a meal for yourself among other things. It’s a matter of taking charge of your life and becoming responsible for yourself. In matters of faith we are also similarly challenged. Many of our youth preparing for Confirmation are challenged in this way but then forget about it after the Sacrament is received. Young couples preparing for marriage often times come to the realization they have never yet registered as an independent member of the church but still ride on their family’s membership. We often follow the routine of the faith life we have been raised within; going to mass each Sunday, receiving the Sacraments etc., going along with the crowd. This weekend’s Gospel message challenges us to reflect upon our practices and ask the question, “Do we really know whom it is we follow?” “And you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.’ Then he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from” Luke 13:26-27. “Strive to enter through the narrow door…” Luke 13:24. What is the narrow door? Perhaps it is a personal relationship with Jesus? Perhaps its living as an intentional disciple? At the last judgment, don’t find yourself out alone in the cold. “Jesus, I have been taught to follow you by coming to church since I was very young. I’m sorry for the times I have failed to hear your call; the times I failed to recognize your invitation to me. I believe you died upon the cross to forgive my sins. I accept your sacrifice for me. Set free the gift of your Holy Spirit given to me at my Baptism, and strengthened at my Confirmation, that I may recognize you, deepen my relationship with you, and have the strength to follow you with my life. Thank you for inviting me to enter through the narrow door….Amen.”

As we begin the month of August, in any department store, you’ll notice the “Back to School” supply section is stocked and ready for “Back to School” shoppers. It seems like summer just began and yet we need to prepare for that next step in the circle of life and family. In much the same way our Biblical lessons this weekend focus upon preparations for the great things God wishes to do with us. The book of Wisdom reflects upon the night of the first Passover. From the story in Exodus we know the chosen people followed the directive of Moses and ate the meal with staff in hand, sandals on their feet; dressed as if they could leave immediately. For after this night, the enactment of the last plague, ‘death of the firstborn,’ the Egyptians would ask, demand, and even fill them with gifts and supplies so that the Jews would leave their country. In the Gospel of Luke, we are encouraged to “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks” Luke 12:35-36. Blessed will those servants be whom the master finds so prepared and ready. St. Paul reminds us all that “our citizenship is in heaven from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” Philippians 3:20. What is the best preparation for that “second coming” of our Savior? The letter to the Hebrews inspires the answer, “grow in the gift of faith.” “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out…….. By faith he sojourned in the Promised Land as in a foreign country…….. By faith he received power to generate…..” Hebrews, chapter 11. We grow in faith by making time for prayer within our lives, participating in Sunday worship, teaching and sharing our faith with others - catechesis, and making time for generous and selfless service of the Kingdom as we work within service ministries. Faithfully enacting these simple preparations will help us remain await and sober as we await God’s Kingdom among us.

PICNIC DAY MASS SCHEDULE CHANGE - On Sunday, August 21st, St. Martin will celebrate the 8:00AM Traditional Mass. However the 9:30AM Gospel Mass will not be held but moved to the 12Noon Mass at Como Park. Bring your lawn chairs and come to worship with us.
