This Sunday our Gospel reading from Mark begins with the second foretelling of our Lord’s Passion and death. Last week when we heard the first exposition of this prophecy Peter was told by Jesus to “get behind me Satan for you are thinking not as God does but has human beings do” Mk 8:33. In this Sunday’s text after the second prediction of the passion Jesus observes His disciples in lively discussion as they make their way forward. After an inquiry He begins to teach them about proper servant leadership. Jesus uses a child as a symbol of society’s most vulnerable. Even though our society is greatly different than that of the time of Jesus, children are still most vulnerable. Sometimes they have suffered greatly at the hands of our clergy and lay leadership. We pray for healing for all victims of abuse:
God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, and always just: You gave your only Son to save us by his blood on the cross.
Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace; join to your own suffering the pains of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them.
Hear the cries of our brothers and sisters who have been gravely harmed, and the cries of those who love them. Soothe their restless hearts with hope; steady their shaken spirits with faith. Grant them justice for their cause, enlightened by your truth.
Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your children’s wounds and transform brokenness into wholeness. Grant us the courage and wisdom, humility and grace, to act with justice. Breathe wisdom into our prayers and labors. Grant that all harmed by abuse may find peace in justice. We ask this through Christ our Lord….Amen!
