This weekend’s Biblical lessons begin with a solemn declaration: “Be Holy for I, the Lord, Your God Am Holy” Lv. 19:2. St. Paul then reminds us that even our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and worthy of that holiness. However the passage from the Gospel of Matthew is complex in its true meaning. On the surface it may appear that we are called to be the “door mat” to others. It appears as if we are called to passively take whatever abuse anyone wishes to throw upon us. Is this passiveness the way to true “holiness?” I think not. This series of examples have hidden within them the power of mind over brawn. To “turn the cheek” is not to submit to beating. In the culture of the time to be struck by one who has authority over you is to inflict a back handed hit to the right cheek of the one facing you. When one turns to offer the opposite cheek it can only be struck with the open hand of the same arm. This gesture would have been an insult to the afflicter. When one goes to court over your cloak; your only warm outer ware, then strip naked for all to see and yield all your clothing to your embarrassed accuser. When pressed into service for one mile, go two and remove the power from the demander. These are examples of the awesome instruction of Jesus the radical teacher who wisely teaches that violence begets violence, hatred begets hatred, etc. The only solution in dealing with one’s enemy, as taught by Jesus the master teacher and echoed through the centuries by contemporary teachers such as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is making an enemy a friend. Only then is hostility ended and peace possible.
