It is either good planning on the part of some, or an occurrence of God’s incredible Spirit that we mediate each Sunday this year on the various aspects of the Gospel in this liturgical year “C.” Each and every Sunday is yet another installment which reinforces the theme of God’s incredible mercy. Last week we learned lessons from the famous Prodigal Son narrative of Luke’s Gospel. This weekend we hear the all familiar, “woman caught in the act of adultery” narrative in John 8. Again the message of the event is directed to two groups: the professional religious, the Scribes and Pharisees, and a sinner who happens to be the woman in the narrative. Jesus’ teaching about the unconditional love of our God for each and every human person made in His image is new to most of His contemporaries after all only the Jews were the “Chosen People.” Yet Jesus, again and again, raises the bar of welcome and the responsibility to turn from our sin and welcome God’s forgiveness. Justified by the Law of Moses, such a woman should be stoned to death. Rocks in hand they ask Jesus for a verdict. Jesus turns the tables on them requesting that the one without sin be the first to cast the stone. You can hear the rocks fall from guilty hands as one by one they leave Jesus alone with the woman. However, the woman, now free is admonished, “Go, and from now on do not sin any more” John 8:11. Again and again Jesus in word and deed proclaims: Repent and believe in the Good News. What is the Good News? God has unconditional love for you. Do you believe it?
