On the 13th of March in 2013, white smoke billowed from the chimney on the roof of the dwelling where the Papal Conclave was in session. It was on this day that a Jesuit Cardinal from Argentina was elected and called forth to become our next, “Holy Father,” Pope Francis. From the moment he stepped upon the Papal Balcony and asked for the people of the world’s blessing, we knew our time with him will be different than what we had seen before. With a spirit of simplicity and humility he emulates his namesake “Francis.” His public concern for the poor, prisoners, and the disenfranchised continually challenges his contemporaries as well as all of us in the flock. Although we love and admire all who have walked in the footsteps of St. Peter, Pope Francis, in a way, walks most powerfully in the footsteps of Jesus. Truly he is the Vicar of Christ Jesus to our world today. The end of our Liturgical Year always is celebrated by acclaiming Jesus Christ as King. But of course Jesus, in His life and ministry, rejected any grandeur and pomp. His crown was of thorns; His throne the wood of the cross; His love was for each and every one of us even the least among us. If we ever need assistance applying the Gospel Message of Jesus to our life, we only need look to His Vicar here on earth and we will learn the concrete way the Good News is to be preached to our world. We are all called to be servant leaders. Let us humbly embrace the service of the Gospel of Jesus and be of humble service to the Kingdom of God.
