It always amazes me that while in multiple conversations in a crowded environment, amid a flurry of children shouting, singing, and playing a parent can hear the sudden distressing cry of their own child and respond. In the midst of the upheaval within the Church of Buffalo, elsewhere around the country, and in our world, the prophetic voice of God still resounds: “Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not!” Isaiah 35:4. As we return once more to the Gospel of Mark this weekend we hear the story of Jesus who through a very physical, “hands on” ritual, healed a deaf mute. People began to see in this action a fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah concerning the coming of the Messiah: “Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing” Isaiah 35:5-6. Even the healing itself is symbolic. We need to have our ears opened in order to hear the voice of Jesus; the voice of God. We are living through a time of great distress, worry, questioning, and fear. But this time is also a time ripe with the opportunity to seek the Lord’s voice through all this uncertainty. We turn to the wisdom of St. Teresa of Avila, a Doctor of the Church: “Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, all things are passing away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things.
Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices. “Lord make us turn to you, let us see your face and we shall be saved” Psalm 80:3.
