They said, "Lord save us!  We are going to drown!" Matthew 8.25

Dear Parents,
Addictions affect the whole family.  I am the mother of an alcoholic.  My husband and I almost lost our son when he was 17.  At 33, he is a recovering alcoholic with a beautiful son of his own.  He has not had a drink in almost 12 years.  I cannot begin to tell you all that I want you to know about addictions in adolescents.  First, mother to mother, father to father, my husband and I want you to know the signs that your child may be experimenting with addictions:
  • Lying about where he has been and with whom
  • Increasing mood swings
  • Personality changes
  • Inability to to sleep at night
  • Changes in friendships
  • Increasing family conflicts
  • Unexplained purchases or an increase in cash
  • Unexplained missing money or property
  • Pallor, weight loss and health problems
  • Drop in grades
  • Skipping school
Remember the "new" addiction - gambling.  What starts as innocent card playing, becomes significant gambling.  Sometimes the parents of your child's friends may even host these parties, thinking that they are just "innocent fun".  Also, household products may be addictive. Secondly, I want you to feel free to call me if you ever find yourself walking in my shoes.  I promise I'll listen.  I won't judge you.  I will help you find the resources you need to get you and your family through it.  Lastly, the old adage is true - "Confession is good for the soul."  Don't hide your child's addiction!  His life and your peace depend on you facing it head on.  The first step is to admit it to yourself.  You'll be happier for it.
God's Peace,
